How to choose a fly fishing rod

Posted by admin under: fishing tackle

Choosing a fly fishing rod is a not that simple endeavour. Do you go with your ego, expected fishing environment or something else? While length is a factor, the bend or action of the rod is a key factor.

Flexibility
Fly fishing rods are often defined by their flexibility. Flexibility means how far the rods will bend when the same casting effort is used.

Minimum Bend
A fly fishing rod that has minimal bend is often called a “fast” rod. The lack of bend lets the fisherman get lots of speed on the cast. This speed allows you to cast very accurately and farther away than rods with more bends. While these benefits may sound great at first glance, a fast rod can be foil. There is no room for error when using the rod. If you are going to use one of these rods, you need excellent motion and timing. In general, only fishers with a lot of experience should have a go at using fast rods.

Moderate Bend
The next step down from a fast rod is one with medium flexibility. These rods tend to have good flexibility, but the bend is restricted to the top half of the rod. The rod requires less perfection of motion and timing, but is fairly accurate. If you’ve been fishing for a while and have the basic techniques down, a moderately flexible rod is worth a try.

Slinky Bend
If you are just taking up fly fishing, you should use a rod with maximum flexibility. While others suggest a moderate bend is better for beginners, a “slinky bend” rod gives you a lot of leeway when it comes to learning to cast.

Fly fishing is relaxing and enjoyable. Choosing the wrong rod, however, and it can quickly become frustrating and stressful. If you use your brain, not your ego, when picking a rod, you will have a blast.

Why Do We Catch Fish?

Posted by admin under: offtopic

As anglers, one of the biggest questions that we can answer is, why do we catch fish? Although there are a myriad of reasons why fish bite or don’t bite, there are a few important ones that every angler should be aware of. Hence the writing of this article. I’m going to explore some of the main reasons why fish bite or don’t bite, in the hopes that you can then use this information to your advantage as an angler.

A big reason why fish bite is odor. That is, the smells that is on the bait or lure. We’ve all seen the various scents that can be added to bait and lures to attract fish, right? Well for many species of fish (such as trout) the opposite is true as well. That is, if there are unnatural scents on the bait or lure, some fish are much less apt to bite. For example, gasoline residue from filling your vehicle with gas or the smell of smoke from smoking a cigarette can most certainly cost you bites.

The remedy for this problem is to pick up a handful of grass of dirt before fishing and rub it into your hands. This effectively cleanses your hands of any unnatural odors that might be present. The key is that this an answer to the question of why do we catch fish. Fish bite because they think our offering is a natural item, which means it should ’smell’ like natural item.

Another key to why we catch fish is Mother Nature. What do I mean by this? Simply that Mother Nature, and specifically the weather and moon, play a huge role in whether or not we catch fish. As anglers we need to understand how these two forces of Mother Nature affect fish behavior. Have you ever had one of those epic days fishing where it seemed like you could do no wrong? Like whatever you threw into the water resulted in fish being caught? This more than likely had to do with the you fishing at the perfect time, rather than anything else. You were fishing when the weather and moon were in your favor.

The weather and moon are a big reason why we catch fish and the more you understand this phenomenon the better off you’ll be. Another big reason why we catch fish is natural presentation. This is especially true when fishing with live worms. The best way to achieve a truly natural presentation is through the use of gang hooks. Gang hooks allow you to present live bait (and especially worms) in a natural and effective manner. This is another big reason why we catch or don’t catch fish.

Are these all of the reasons why we as anglers catch fish? No of course not, but these are some of the most popular. Not only are these the most popular, if you begin employing these tips, you will begin catching more fish. Knowing these reasons why fish bite, and then using that information to your advantage will make a big difference in your catch rates. How am I so sure of this? Because I’ve been using these tips to my advantage for more than 20 years and know how effective they are.

Advices for choosing fly fishing rods

Posted by admin under: fishing tackle

Frequent Flyer 3-Piece Spin Rod
An ancient form of casting, the fly fishing has now become popular. In fly fishing, choosing the right fishing rod is most important. Only the right fly fishing rod along with the correct reel will deliver the best results.

In contrast from the bait fishing, the rods used in fly fishing are more long and light weight. There are a lot of fly fishing rods in the market in different lengths and different materials which you can choose from. Choose the fly fishing rod that suits your style.

Before you attempt fly fishing, just make sure that you are using the right rod. The length, weight and flexibility are some of the basic things that you have to consider before choosing the fly fishing rod. In different circumstances, different rods are used. Shorter fishing rods are good when casting in saltwater. In fresh water, it is better to go for a lengthier one. However, it is always better to choose a longer fly fishing rod, which puts more pressure on the fish.

Flexibility is another important thing that one has to look into while choosing the fly fishing rods. The fly fishing rods that has the minimal bend is faster. Using the minimal bend rod, you can have more speed and accuracy while casting. If you are attempting fly fishing for the first time, then it is better that you do not choose this. As speed and timing are essential while using this fishing rod, only experienced persons use it. Better, you practice the art of fly fishing and then go for the speed rods. Certain fly fishing rods only bend to the top half. These moderate bending rods have good flexibility and, less timing and speed is needed than the fast fishing rods. While using these rods also, you should have a little experience. Then there is the fly fishing rod that has the maximum flexibility, which is good for beginners. Having no strains, you can manage at ease.

The fly fishing rods made in different materials – Bamboos, graphite and fiberglass. Bamboo fly fishing rod, which has been used for ages, is everyone’s choice. Flexible and Lightweight, these bamboo fly fishing rods makes your casting more perfect. Very strong, the Graphite fly fishing rods are also used. These graphite rods are more stiff than the bamboo fly fishing rods. The prices vary from product to product and it is better that you consult someone who can help you to get the best one. Having more durability, flexibility and strength, the fiber rods are in much demand than the other two fly fishing rods. But the only thing is that these fiber rods are heavier than the Bamboo and graphite fly fishing rods.

You have to choose the rod according to the type of fishing that you are into. If going to fish for active and strong fishes, you need a longer and stronger fly fishing rod. In rough waters, you have to go for more flexible and faster fly fishing rods.
